3 Reasons That Tablet For The Holidays Might Not Be The Best Gift For Your Child

In our tech-heavy world, devices like tablets, smartphones, or gaming consoles seem like ideal holiday gift options. However, giving a screen as a holiday gift can unintentionally create challenges that affect your child’s screen habits and your family dynamic.

LookUp asks that you reconsider ensuring the magic of the holidays shines brighter than any device. Here's why:

1. It Labels the Screen as a Toy

When a screen is wrapped up like a holiday surprise, it sends a subtle yet powerful message: *This is a fun object for your enjoyment.* By presenting a screen in the same way as toys, the child might equate it with entertainment alone, rather than as a tool for learning or communication. This can reinforce the idea that screens are purely for pleasure, which may lead to overuse or screen obsession.

Alternative: Introduce screens as tools, not toys. If your child genuinely needs a device, frame it as a family decision and discuss its responsibilities and limits beforehand.

2. It Creates a False Sense of Ownership

When a child receives a device as a gift, they often interpret it as "theirs." This sense of ownership can make it harder for parents to enforce rules, set boundaries, or monitor usage. Kids may resist limits by saying, “It’s mine!”—turning a device into a battleground.

Alternative: If a screen is necessary, present it as a shared family resource. Make it clear from the start that the device is subject to family rules and oversight.

3. Screen-time is Now The Priority

Receiving a device as a holiday gift places it at the center of a child’s attention during a season that should be about connection, togetherness, and creating memories. Instead of cherishing time with family, kids may retreat to their new device, prioritizing screen time over relationships and experiences.

Alternative: Focus on gifts that encourage creativity, family bonding, or outdoor play. If a device is part of the equation, balance it with non-screen-related gifts and set limits on its use during the holiday season.

The goal is not to demonize screens—they’re an inevitable part of modern life—but to introduce them thoughtfully. Here are a few tips if you decide a device is necessary:

1. Have a “Welcome to the Device” Talk: Set clear expectations for when, where, and how the device can be used. Check out our Boundary Suggestions Here

2. Create an Agreement: Outline the family’s rules about screen time, app downloads, and internet use. Make it a collaborative process so your child feels involved.

3. Delay as Much as Possible: Remember, there’s no rush. The longer you wait to introduce screens, the more time your child has to develop healthy habits offline and enjoy the holidays with true joy and laughter! Check out our ideal tech-steps suggestions HERE

What LookUp is Trying to Say...

Gifting a screen might feel like a way to make your child happy, but the potential downsides—obsession, conflict, and disconnection—can outweigh the momentary excitement. By shifting the focus to more meaningful gifts and introducing screens with intention, you’re giving your child the best gift of all: a balanced and connected childhood.
